It is so easy to walk through life, some of us racing through, without having to take any consequences for our actions. I’m not talking about the major things, like murdering someone – I’m hoping most of us don’t go around murdering people (sorry Mr. Mass Murderer, this obviously does not include you), but this is really about the smaller things we do without giving it a second thought.
A major problem that has plagued Kuwait for a long time is litter, especially when the weather is nicer and the beaches and grass areas are crawling with people, playing games, barbequing, eating snacks and having all sorts of fun activities. However, walking onto one of those beaches after the merrymakers have packed up and left, it is quite shocking to see the sight that is left behind.
These are some of the items that have reportedly been found on the beach in the past: pampers (usually used), glass bottles (broken and otherwise), cigarette butts, needles (I don’t even want to know how), plastic bags, leftover food, empty food packaging, firework shells and other rubbish and litter.
Is this a flaw in our society? Are we so selfish that when we go out for a picnic, we can’t fathom the thought of using some of those empty plastic bags and filling them with our own rubbish and throwing it at the nearest bin? Or is it because we’re lazy? I just don’t understand it, people are perfectly capable of cleaning up after themselves to keep our beaches and parks (the few we have) clean and hygienic.
After hearing of what has been found on the beaches, I am worried to encourage families to go there! Needles and glass are the main cause of concern, not only does it encourage injury, but allows diseases to be spread with ease, aside from the hygiene and injury issue, it is just about respecting the environment, and ensuring that we can enjoy it at the very least in its current state for years to come.
In light of this, Keep Kuwait Clean has organized a beach cleanup on the 3rd of April 2010. The main purpose of this is primarily to increase awareness of the situation that exists, and in the process have at least one beach clean for our use.
This isn’t about miracles, it’s not about changing the world, it’s not about revolutionary results, and it’s not about expecting all of Kuwait to be litter-free. This is about encouraging individuals to think about personal behavior, it’s about a pausing for a second to reconsider when about to litter, it’s about gathering support for the cause, it’s about taking one small step at a time in order to make a difference.
Please take a step in the right direction and come support the Keep Kuwait Clean Team on Saturday the 3rd of April 2010, at 4 pm, on the beach next to TGI Fridays. We are also on facebook so any further details be needed can be found there.
