While reading Al Qabas this morning I came upon this article which talks about the test-tube babies division in the Ministry of Health.

What really interested me is that the ministry is ‘considering’ the idea of choosing the gender of babies based on medical foundation, not social preferences.

My question is, does this mean that before this announcement, couples had the freedom of freely choosing the gender of their baby?

The above article is a bit ambiguous regarding this matter, but if it is true, isn’t it morally or religiously frowned upon?

I must say that regardless of what is being said about it, this division is still a source of medical pride for Kuwait and they address a huge and embarrassing problem for many couples out there and I wish them all the best in the future.

I’m not sure what the religious call is on this matter and I would like to know. But something about picking the gender doesn’t sit well with me – I suppose because it feels as if you’re saying you’re not satisfied with whatever God decides to bless you with. By the same token, people use science to change many many aspects in their lives and isn’t that part of “alsa3ee” behind what you want? Madri.

Invitro Fertiliazation… is mainly used around the world to fliter genetic diseases, and giving to parents who are having a hard time conceiving hope for a healthy child.
My friend did it for every pregnancy, in Jeddah, becuase there were too many genetic diseases in her family, she was afraid her kids would suffer from them, but she never asked for a specific gender, and she carried one child per pregnancy.
However, to have this to choose if the family want a boy or girl, I think it discriminating and encourage stoneage thinking!
    Allah Kareem!

I don’t understand why this problem would be called an “embarrassing problem for many couples out there.” It’s like saying being born with a disability is embarrassing; or is it not … ?
