Kuwaiti Telecom Wars!
By Abdulmohsen
We just received the following pictures by email.
Look at these ads, presumably made by VIVA:
Notice the color themes used… :)
Now look at this ad in today’s newspapers… this is probably in reaction to the above ads and might be made by Zain:
Now this will be very interesting… but the question is, is VIVA wrong in challenging the marketing power of Zain?
To be honest I don’t know about VIVA’s marketing strength but we all know about Zain’s capabilities and what they are capable of.
What do you think?
Thanks Q8 Observer!

July 10th, 2009 @ 7:09 PM
hahah!
if i was at zain and it was my call I wd say :
ما رأيك بشبكةأفضل تكمل خدماتك
this way it’s a service by service war and not a personal issue like zain’s reaction.
;)

hehehe viva are screwed!
July 10th, 2009 @ 7:15 PM
kuwait marketing is all bullshit, its pretty pictures and taglines and promises more than it can deliver (i.e. EGO) – customers are always the biggest losers while companies indulge in price fixing amongst themselves.
the day one can move their number from one mobile company to another is the day youll see these companies really fighting for customers

Walla I think all these ads belongs to Viva! Zain has nothing to do with it!
Is this even legal to use other companies’ identity?
July 10th, 2009 @ 9:17 PM
Frankom…walla how much did viva pay you to say that????
Awal shay all thw ads belong to viva so dont go and jump into conclusions….
Thany shay…yes it should be illegal and agaisnt business ethics….go check the western places…if someone used ANYTHING that relates to another company they will be sued ya thaky.
Man try to be more reasonable than going around bashing zain whereever u can
July 10th, 2009 @ 10:52 PM

July 10th, 2009 @ 11:25 PM
‘To frankom’: Using other companies identities in advertizement is a normal thing in the west… Just look at the pc and mac ads as well as audi and bmw… I’m just happy that ads are now very interesting and we all can’t wait for round 2!

Do we know the response was made by zain or it’s all speculations? coz I see that people are fighting based on the assumption that it is by zain…
*scratches head*
July 11th, 2009 @ 1:20 PM
HAHa .. this is very entertaining! Keep it up Zain .. I really hope the last AD was made by them :)

First I would like to say this media war is something normal, and healthy. But I also would like to add that every corporation should tack pride in their identity and defend it like there is not tom. Simply because they have spent so much time, effort, and money to get to this point!!!! Some of you may ask what point??
Allow me to explain.. billing an corporate identity is part of a marketing tactic called “branding” and branding by definition is the consistency of a tangible and in-tangible idea. Meaning if a company is consistent in all of its communication to the public, and this includes the message, size of the advertising in publications, color, font and theme and more.. this will have an emotional and physical effect on its target market. Accordingly this will lead to brand perception, how do we perceive the brand and what kind of feeling do we get when we see or hear about it!!!
Now we all know that Zain is company that always trays to build a positive brand perception, and we can c that in its branding ads, “we don’t enforce our service we propose it”, the Qatoorah TVC, the “wonderful world”, and more … also having the human element in most of its printed media. Triggering our emotions to have a healthy loving feeling towards the brand “Zain” and I believe they did an amazing job!!!
Any marketer always treys to shorten the gap between brand positioning and brand perception, to increase “Brand equity” what is Brand equity???? Ok.. least say that Pepsi decided to sell only its operations without the brand name “Pepsi” for the value of 10$ selling it with the brand name will have a different and bigger value right? The difference is value is the bard equity. LOL I hope this is not confusing
By now we should all have a better understanding of how important an identity is.
And going back to the issue at hand.. Zain understand its value and will not let any other competitors tack advantage of that, and this is why Zain launched a retaliation campaign to notify the market and viva that we can also temper with ur image. As for Wataniya I hope they do something regarding the mimicking of its identity.

I know that many ppl hate zain just for the sake of hating them.. so this might actually work ;p
but I likes zain’s reaction.. way to go :D
July 11th, 2009 @ 4:34 PM
hahahaha viva got owned ;p
July 11th, 2009 @ 4:56 PM
I’m curious to see where all this is going to go!
July 11th, 2009 @ 5:39 PM
I don’t think Zain would response.
Frankom, u’re having such a hard time attacking zain ;)

Guys you shouldn’t fall for vivas emails. They’ve been emailing blogs using fake emails pretending to be readers asking bloggers to post about this. You guys are falling for it. Only one guy hasn’t so far. http://alosaimi.blogspot.com/2009/07/vivas-fake-word-of-mouth-campaign.html
July 11th, 2009 @ 11:37 PM

July 12th, 2009 @ 12:44 AM
in marketing… you should never, ever, directly or indirectly attach a competitor… the company attacking will always seem the weaker.
July 12th, 2009 @ 12:57 AM
sorry can i add something else?
this is really a bad marketing call from viva, and zain as well… i think this is a classic example of marketing by unprofessional people with big egos.
July 12th, 2009 @ 8:26 AM
I didnt really get who did who :p
July 12th, 2009 @ 10:18 AM
Plz try to understand. If I started to dress like u, act like u and talk like u to influence ppl to start liking me more than u … I’m sure u will not appreciate that.
July 12th, 2009 @ 10:30 AM

July 12th, 2009 @ 10:51 AM
whats next
July 12th, 2009 @ 11:38 AM
Than k u… but really this is the whole pint
July 12th, 2009 @ 12:35 PM
why in god’s name should it be illegal, this goes on in most countries with powerful marketing.. it’s their 1st try so give them a chance and let the competition begin
July 12th, 2009 @ 6:39 PM
If you ask me I think these ad challenges the scale of Brand Loyalty versus Price Sensitivity. How will the telecom consumers choose their service providers?
I think it is a gentlemen’s agreement of all three to run these ads. In the world of Human Resources they are doing the same thing. Don’t hire mine and I won’t touch yours. Joint decisions like these make the competition more interesting… like a game of Risk.
July 13th, 2009 @ 12:01 PM
This was a failed attempt at advertising/marketing. The fact that no one knew it was Viva advertising on Zain & Wataniya identities except for bloggers is enough. Not to mention the reveal of the campaign where they went back to square one by showing numbers on backgrounds, with zilch info on them and nothing new to say.
I think Viva should spend their money on research and development of their existing products, and by now they should have learned something from their Saudi ancestry that attacking competitors without a solid product/service DOES NOT WORK.
Next time they try to pull something like that will be their end and I think everyone whether working for Zain, Wataniya or Viva knows that for sure.
July 13th, 2009 @ 12:32 PM
In all out honesty and hope, I really want to see Zain (MTC) humiliated……..they have taken so much out of us…
If a poll were to be made about which companies do residents of Q8 dislike the most, I am confident that MTC (ops, i mean Zain) would hit one of the top the spots if not the top place itself!
July 14th, 2009 @ 4:59 AM
