This pic is shamelessly stolen from Ilsul6ana

Many of you have already heard of this 5,000 KD grant to all Kuwaitis over 21 years. We should also realize that it is not approved yet by neither the National Assembly nor the Government.

Now this is what I think of this issue:

If I assumed that most of the MPs are only interested in their popularity among the voting masses, then I begin to wonder as to what are the real intentions behind this bill. I agree with most of the comments written in Ilsul6ana’s post, I’d rather see the old Kuwaiti infrastructure get a much needed makeover. We might have two scenarios with this bill, the first scenario is that the Government would reject this bill and the committee would be back to square one. The second scenario is that the Government would actually accept it and suddenly we are all 5,000 KD richer.

If I was a dishonest MP who only jumps on the popularity bandwagon then I would make sure to support this bill. The reason behind this decision is to show the voters that I was responsible for passing the bill. If the Government rejected the bill, then I could also say that I did my best but the evil Government did not want people to live happily ever after. It would be a win-win situation for me right? I’m just glad that I’m not an MP or other people would say that about me! :D

This example can also be applied in the failed bill to buy out the interest on loans a few months ago.

I understand that the Kuwaiti infrastructure should be improved regardless of whether this bill is passed or not but this policy of financial appeasement by the MPs is not only bad for our future but also an insult to our intelligence.

I should also note that the bill is for all Kuwaitis over 21, I find it amusing to see that the voting age in Kuwait is also 21.

What do you guys think?

This money would be better spent on upgrading our schools and hospitals! Don’t get me wrong I would love to get a 5000 kd prezzie and who would’t, but what good will that do? We are just giving kuwaiti citizens the idea that basically they can get money easily without having to earn it! They are promoting the wrong message here! Unfortunately Kuwaiti’s nowadays EXPECT everything to be handed to them on a silver plate, Ok they would be thankful for a year or so but once that money runs out they’ll be banging on the parliaments door asking for more. Which was exactly the case with the loans bailout.

I think the government should start spending the money on things that will help to build a better future for our children and not for the sake of winning the popularity vote!

Disastrous for society, great for avenues and 360 – by the way i really like how you give your 2 cents on issues rather than just posting the news :)

WELL SAID! These idiotic MPs that dream up handing out cash to people are very sinister. This money could be used to develop our infrastructure, our power and utilities, the education sector, so on and so on.

But the MPs in our country lack common sense and a rationale understanding of macroeconomics, and tease the population with initiatives like this.

Furthermore, i hope the government kills this bill (if it pasts parliament, which it likely will because of the “tribal” element.

However, when the next elections take place candidates should learn to be policy/agenda driven not reward driven.

Kuwait is a country not a company that’s obliged to pay dividends. You never hear things like this taking place in other parts of the world, al 7amduallah 3la kel 7al.

And.. Kuwaitis should vote based on policy and agenda not on the short-term economic rewards/relief promised.

Its very sad that people don’t understand the underlying concept of “democracy”.

Majlis el Khamah is garbage, everything that comes in and out of it is garbage.

Its ridiculous! We still have the plant in Mishref which hasn’t been fixed and they need to overhaul it!

We need to overhaul our communication systems.

Some of our roads need overhauling as well.

We need new powerplants and new desalinization plants! At this rate we will run out of water just as we are running out of power!
